Good afternoon everyone,
It was nice to see over 30 of you today at office hours. I truly enjoy the time to have some brief informal discussions and offer updates that we have from DOE.
There was some discussion about accessing vaccine for both influenza and the school-required vaccines such as MenACWY. The School Located Vaccine Toolkit<https://www.maine.gov/doe/sites/maine.gov.doe/files/inline-files/School%20Health%20Services%20-%20ME%20CDC%20-%20School%20Located%20Vaccine%20Clinic%20Toolkit%209.23.2024.pdf> has been updated for 2024. You can reach out to a healthcare partner such as Northern Light or MaineGeneral to assist. Or contact public health nursing and they will work with you to get a clinic scheduled.
>From the SLVC Toolkit: For Community Health Agencies that need assistance with how to hold a School/ Mass Immunization Clinic, contact: Brianna Horan, Maine General, 207-861-5274 Brianna.Horan at mainegeneral.org OR Cathy Bean Kelley, Northern Light Home Care & Hospice, 207-400-8725 beanc at northernlight.org<mailto:beanc at northernlight.org>
Peer Support for Schools that want to know how to organize and hold a school immunization clinic, contact one of the following School Nurses: Pat Endsley, Wells-Ogunquit CSD, 207-641-6967, pendsley at wocsd.org<mailto:pendsley at wocsd.org>
It was asked by one nurse if the influenza vaccine forms from Anthem and MEABT (for those offering vaccine clinics for staff) had been sent out yet. I am sharing 3 documents that were shared with me by one of your colleagues (thank you Shannon Robbins!). Hopefully it helps some of you.
Your families can order FREE Covid Tests.<https://acl.gov/accessibletests> You can share the information with your school community.
Webinar Series Partnership with AAP and Maine DOE is underway. They are the first Tuesday of each month. The Flyer is attached. Register at: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/SchoolHealthSeries
Do you ever struggle to get access to peer reviewed journals when you are searching for research based nursing practice? The Digital Maine Library (DML)<https://digitalmainelibrary.org/> began a new program in September. DML provides some excellent relevant full text resources, and they are free to use for anyone in the state. There’s MEDLINE with Full Text, PubMed, Consumer Health Complete and Health Source: Nursing/Academic Edition. There’s also a resource specifically for students in associate degree programs which includes several health-related fields. We are currently working to provide seamless access to these resources within all Maine schools so that no log on will be required. Right now, it’s happening in some schools but not all of them yet. School nurses—if you have trouble accessing this, you can reach out to the Amy.Cummings at Maine.gov<mailto:Amy.Cummings at Maine.gov> from the Maine State Library (207-287-5641). There is also a handy request form for article requests here if you can’t access what you need https://www.maine.gov/msl/libs/interlib/illcopy.htm
CPR Renewal Classes throughout the state by our school nurse liaisons. The next class with open slots is in Hampden on October 23<https://www.maine.gov/doe/index.php/schoolsupports/schoolhealth/professionaldevelopment#calendar-6c6f22e1-033b-47cd-8ea3-0906acf8c9e4-event-m1flf7zl>. Maine’s Maternal and Child Health Program at the Maine CDC administers the Maternal and Child Health Block Grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). Every five years states are required to conduct a needs assessment to continue to evaluate the state’s specific priorities. We need your help. This short survey should only take about 5-10 minutes to complete, and your responses will be anonymous. The survey will ask about priorities in five MCH population domains:
1. Women’s and maternal health,
2. Perinatal and infant health,
3. Child health,
4. Adolescent health and
5. Children and youth with special health care needs.
The goal is to collect survey responses from a wide range of individuals including program administrators, service providers, program participants, families, people with lived experience and others invested in maternal and child health services in Maine. To complete the survey, please click on the survey link in your preferred language below.

Please forward this email to any other individuals, programs or groups whose input you think would be important to include. The survey will stay open until October 21st. If you have any questions about the survey, please contact So O’Neil at so.oneil at altarum.org<mailto:so.oneil at altarum.org>. Thank you for your help with this important project. Your feedback will help strengthen and enhance maternal and child health programs in Maine.
Integrated Pest Management--Our next Pest Defense webinar<https://us06web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZUldOCvqzssGN0yOSoCweB0ZCwRHZ9_N6LN> will be Friday, October 4th at 12:00 p.m. CDT with guest speaker Hillary Peterson, IPM Specialist in the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry. School nurses are the eyes and ears of the health of the student body. They have the opportunity to act as a communication hub for both students and staff regarding health concerns. School nurses can serve several important roles to aid schools in being healthier environments for students. This presentation will cover how school nurses can play a crucial role in coordinating efforts and notifying staff and administration about ticks, indoor air quality issues, pesticide exposure, rash prevention and more.
Register for the webinar here<https://us06web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZUldOCvqzssGN0yOSoCweB0ZCwRHZ9_N6LN>!
