The Maine Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is seeking candidates for an Environmental Specialist IV position within the Division of Environmental Assessment, Bureau of Water Quality.

BRIEF JOB DESCRIPTION: This position coordinates activities of the Maine Healthy Beaches (MHB) program. It serves as the primary liaison to local beach stakeholders and oversees the implementation of monitoring, assessment, and public notification for approximately 60 marine beaches (Kittery to Mount Desert Island). Duties include: training professionals and volunteers; providing ongoing support and technical assistance on sampling procedures, beach postings, and management decisions; developing and maintaining protocols and supplemental materials; collaborating with laboratories; ensuring that quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) objectives are met; serving as a point of contact for public inquiries; developing and distributing education/outreach materials and reports; delivering presentations to diverse audiences; and managing the program budget. Additional duties may include engaging in applied research partnerships and providing support for source tracking monitoring efforts. The position supervises one full-time staff, the MHB Program Specialist, and one annually hired Maine Conservation Corps Environmental Steward.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: An eight (8) year combination of education and/or experience in environmental science or related area which includes at least two (2) years of supervisory or program management/administration experience.  Qualifying education must include at least 15 credit hours of science or engineering coursework.

Preference will be given to candidates with the following skills or experience:
*        Knowledge and understanding of biological principles, particularly those pertaining to water quality for fresh and marine waters.
*        Strong written and oral communication skills, including experience writing technical reports, delivering presentations, and facilitating meetings.
*        Strong organizational abilities with great attention to detail.
*        Experience coordinating and training volunteers.
*        Experience with data management, including data quality assurance/control protocols.

*        Ability to adapt and respond appropriately to multiple simultaneous demands and prioritize tasks appropriately.
*        Ability to provide exceptional customer service in a fast-paced work environment.
*        Ability to provide effective supervisory support and successfully collaborate with other DEA teams and partner organizations.
