I thought I'd pass on the attached graphic "Fallen Tree? Leave it Be! Streams Love Fallen Logs!" This graphic was created by the Maine Conservation Corps member Carolina Swindel, who is currently volunteering with the Maine DEP Watershed Unit.
With all the fallen trees we've had recently and this past winter, it feels like a good time to promote this message!

Please help spread the word that fallen logs in streams are good. Good for fish habitat, good for important aquatic bugs, and good for stream movement and allowing high flows to get into the floodplain. As many of you know, we do not have enough large wood in the majority of our streams and we strategically place and secure logs in streams as the restoration technique.

I know there are a lot of industrious folks out there cleaning up fallen trees and limbs right now, so please help spread the word (using the graphic if you'd like - thank you Carolina!) that fallen logs in streams are good - leave them be!

Thank you,
Kristin
