[SchoolFinance] Municipal School w/ Separate EIN for Payroll

Are there any municipal school districts that have two EINs — one under the
umbrella of the city/town and another specifically for tax reporting
purposes on the school side?

Hermon is set up this way and files all tax-related forms (W-2s, 1099s,
etc.) under a separate EIN. We recently ran into an issue with a sales tax
exemption application where the town’s EIN was used, which inadvertently
removed the town’s sales tax exemption status (oops!).

After speaking with the state, we had to resubmit everything using the
school department’s separate EIN, for which we have an IRS designation
letter.

I’m hoping to connect with others in a similar situation to better
understand when each EIN should be used and any best practices you may
follow.
