Bravo to Alison Ramsdell, School Nurse at Reeds Brook Middle School, who helped coordinate donations to assist hurricane victims in the south. Alison rallied her school and local communities to supply baby formula, OTC medications, toiletries, clothes, towels, food, tarps, blankets, pet food, batteries, first aid kits, and more! Donations were transported to those in need by a local non-profit, the Appalachian Trail Connection.
Congratulations to those of you who have recently obtained your National Board-Certified School Nurse (NCSN) credential!

Is your school district participating in the Maine Youth Integrated Health Survey (MIYHS) for 2025? The purpose of the Maine Integrated Youth Health Survey (MIYHS) is to assess the health status of Maine youth, as well as the attitudes and behaviors that influence healthy development. Data from the MIYHS can be used by schools, community organizations, and state agencies to plan and evaluate prevention programs and to provide the basis for grant applications. The MIYHS represents the collaborative effort of the Department of Health and Human Services' Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Maine CDC) and the Maine Department of Education. Talk with your school administration about participating and find out more information on the survey here.<https://www.maine.gov/miyhs/>

Pertussis- The Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Maine CDC) reports 101 pertussis cases between January 1 and October 23, 2024. This surpasses the 76 cases reported throughout all of 2023. Ages ranged from 1 month to 55 years old. Teenagers (13-19 years old) accounted for 43% of cases. Children under 5 years old accounted for 26% of cases.
Pertussis is most effectively treated in the first, most mild, stage of illness. It is important to consider pertussis as a possible cause of cough illness, particularly in persons who have had a cough for over one week, or persons who have had exposure to someone with pertussis. To assist in this effort, Maine CDC created a pertussis guide for health care providers<https://www.maine.gov/dhhs/mecdc/infectious-disease/epi/vaccine/documents/Pertussis-Guide-Providers.pdf> so that health care professionals have a resource they can use to build knowledge of pertussis and to help navigate the identification, testing, treatment, and prevention of illness. Link to Maine Health Alert Network (HAN) on Pertussis can be found here<https://www.maine.gov/dhhs/mecdc/newhan.shtml>.

Type 1 Diabetes Care in Schools: State-Specific Curriculum
The Maine Department of Education, the Maine Association of School Nurses, and the National Association of School Nurses have been collaborating on a pilot project funded by the Leona M and Harry B Helmsley Charitable Trust to develop a comprehensive, evidence-based school nurse T1D curriculum, which aims to improve care coordination through school nurses for students with type 1 diabetes. This curriculum will consist of two segments that complement each other. The National Curriculum is currently being reviewed by the pilot group and will be released at a later date. The State-Specific Curriculum is available for school nurses and can be found here:

Components for Enhancing Career Experience and Reducing Trauma (CE-CERT) | November 21, 2024
This workshop will provide skills to enhance the way you go about your work, lessening the drain and increasing emotional regulation. CE-CERT is a trauma-informed and skills-based model for improving wellness and reducing secondary traumatic stress and burnout among helping professionals. CECERT was developed by Dr. Brian Miller (2017). As a skills model for individual workers to learn and apply, CE-CERT empowers individuals to improve their own wellness with skills under their control. Additionally, CE-CERT is a model for supervisors and leadership to learn and apply in their organizational culture and supervision of workers.
SUPERVISORS: Note that there will be a follow-up virtual training just for supervisors on December 2nd. More info and registration<https://ccsme.org/eventbrite-event/components-for-enhancing-career-experience-and-reducing-trauma-ce-cert/>
Psychological First Aid:
What is PFA? A full-scale public health response to disasters must attend to both the physical and mental health needs of affected groups. The latter set of needs is especially important because far more individuals will report psychologically related complaints than will report physical symptoms directly stemming from the injury-causing agent or event. Because a large-scale emergency will overwhelm existing mental health response resources, psychological first aid - the provision of basic psychological care in the short-term aftermath of a traumatic event - is an important skill set that all public health, medical, emergency, and community workers and helpers should have.
Skills for Psychological Recovery:
Skills for Psychological Recovery (SPR) is an evidence informed modular approach to help children, adolescents, adults and families in the weeks and months following disaster and exposure to trauma. This training offers SPR with a skills development approach, useful after the time when Psychological First Aid is utilized. SPR is designed to foster effective coping with post-disaster stresses by utilizing several core skill sets to promote the recovery of survivors, prevent maladaptive behaviors and prioritize a survivors’ resilience while focusing on individual needs and capabilities.

StrengthenME – Storm Response<https://mailchi.mp/adcareme/disaster-behavioral-health-news-2024-fall-edition?e=46899b2b36>
A partnership with AdCare Maine and the MaineHealth Center for Trauma, Resilience and Innovation
Webinar Series: StrengthenME Storm Response is an effort made possible by two separate grants, both stemming from presidential disaster declarations following severe storms in December 2023 and January 2024 that devastated communities along the coast and inland. In the aftermath of this severe winter weather, state partners heard about the toll of these events on Mainers, the impact on children, and growing climate anxiety. This webinar series will touch on these themes, and foster a greater understanding of how to care for ourselves or support our families and community after a disaster. Sessions include: Strategies for Managing the Emotional Impacts After a Disaster; How to Support Children Impacted by Trauma; and Managing Anxiety and Fear Related to Climate Change.
