Beyond the Basics Suicide Prevention Conference hosted by NAMI Maine- scheduled for April 11th and will be held in Freeport this year. There has been an invitation for a school nurse panel this year where school nurses candidly share stories, perspectives, and expert guidance on what’s needed to support mental health in our children, schools, and communities. If you are interested in being a part of this panel, please send an email to tammy.diaz at maine.gov.

Melanie Junkins, our colleague in the Office of School and Student Supports, joined us to introduce her role as a Family Engagement and Culturally Responsive Specialist. Melanie is holding English Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Office hours on the fourth Monday of every month at 3:30 for three more sessions with Jane Armstrong, who is an ESOL specialist. The office hours are to support educators and nurses regarding our multilingual learners and their families, if this is something that interests you, please register here.<https://mainestate.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZAqdOqqqjovE9TXnmeY0KRzbHJJIqIvn-7J?_x_zm_rtaid=hIx_Qi6vR9-0wRTTdyCVSA.1705935101837.aa6b7beacd5c82d5c0ca3208deee1437&_x_zm_rhtaid=435#/registration> Some of you did join the last session, and your input launched a need for a translated FAQ for the nurse’s office! Lori and Melanie are in the infancy of this project and are gathering commonly asked questions, in your office. We are looking for broad questions and answers, that can be helpful for any new student, and perhaps the sheet could be part of a welcome packet. An example may be “What happens if I can’t be reached in an emergency?” or “What forms are required for my student if they need medication in school?” We have begun to brainstorm, but who knows better than you! If you have commonly asked questions, that you find answering repetitively, we welcome your input. Contact Melanie.Junkins at maine.gov or Lori.Huot at Maine.gov with your ideas.

Enjoy your February break in a couple weeks. Thank you for all you do to keep children safe, healthy, and ready to learn.
