March 26th 3:30pm - 5:00pm - Winter Lecture Series #4: Build Better Buffers: Native Plants as a Solution to Shoreline Erosion w/ Corey Kotfila and Jim Skinner

We can't make spring come any faster, but we CAN provide some quality programming to hold you over until then! Join us in-person or by Zoom for a month of gardening-themed presentations that are sure to take the chill out of your week. Lectures will be held at the homestead each Wednesday in the month of March; we will serve tea and snacks at 3:30PM before the presentation at 4PM. Corey Kotfila is McLaughlin Garden's Horticulturist. His approach to gardening aims to fortify local ecologies by mimicking the species compositions of native plant communities. Jim Skinner is the Youth Conservation Corps Director for Thompson Lake Environmental Association. A DEP-certified erosion control specialist, Jim works to preserve water quality and address erosion concerns on Thompson Lake.

Together, Corey and Jim have developed the Build Better Buffers program in an effort to mitigate shoreline erosion through native species plantings. This presentation will detail the effects of erosion and runoff on water quality, the ins and outs of BBB, and finally the various plant species that make effective shoreline buffers.
