The Maine Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), Bureau of Land Resources (BLR), is excited to announce an opening for an Environmental Licensing Specialist I based in Bangor. This is a permanent, full-time position that offers the flexibility of remote work opportunities based on Department guidelines.
About the Role
This entry-level position is at the core of environmental policy and protection in Maine. As an Environmental Licensing Specialist I, you'll be responsible for reviewing development proposals to ensure compliance with Maine's environmental laws and regulations. Your work will involve:
* Drafting permitting decisions and recommending approval or denial of permit applications.
* Providing regulatory guidance during pre-application and pre-submission meetings with applicants, consultants, and attorneys.
* Coordinating with other State resource agencies to assess potential environmental impacts.
* Meeting with federal and municipal officials on shared projects.
* Conducting essential site visits.
You'll operate with limited oversight as you gain experience and will also have opportunities to participate in public meetings, hearings, and administrative appeals before the Board of Environmental Protection.
Who We're Looking For
We are seeking candidates with education, training, and/or experience in environmental science or another applicable scientific field. Demonstrated experience in analyzing and processing permits, applications, licenses, and technical information, or directly related experience working with environmental laws, rules, regulations, and complex technical evaluations in a scientific and/or legal field is essential.
Preference will be given to candidates with:
* Education emphasizing natural resource protection and/or management.
* Strong analytical and writing skills.
* Demonstrated interest in the implementation of environmental policy.
* GIS/database management/other computer skills.
* Experience in interpersonal relationships and/or customer service in a fast-paced work environment.
