The Town of Windham is currently seeking a full-time seasonal Environmental Intern for the Planning Department.  This position will begin approximately mid-May through August/September 2024, with daily and weekly work hours fluctuating based on water quality monitoring program and project needs to a maximum of 240 hours. The position operates under the direct guidance and general supervision of the Environmental & Sustainability Coordinator. Skills gained and practiced as part of this internship experience are valuable for any student going into an environmental profession.

Essential Functions:

  *   Assists with implementation of the six Minimum Control Measures (MCMs) as outlined in Maine's Small Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) General Permit<https://www.maine.gov/dep/water/wd/ms4/2022-Municipal-MS4-GP.pdf> and the Town's Stormwater Management Plan<https://www.windhammaine.us/DocumentCenter/View/2915/Windham-Stormwater-Management-Plan-2013-2018>.
     *   Performing stormwater infrastructure inspections.
     *   Conducting dry weather outfall water quality sampling.
     *   Inventorying and updating the Town's Stormwater infrastructure and associated records.
     *   Provide education and outreach to the general public on stormwater management.
  *   Supports DEP Volunteer Stream Water Quality Monitoring Program (VRMP) coordinated by the Presumpscot Regional Land Trust (PRLT).  Intern support is required every other Saturday & Sunday morning between May 18 and September 22.
     *   Conducting basic lab tests and analyses.
     *   Occasionally collecting water samples in the field.
     *   Data input via smartphone app or computer.
Assist with various Town committee and department projects regarding Windham's natural resources.

Learning Outcomes:

  *   Hands on experience utilizing analytical methods, including conducting basic lab tests, water quality sampling, and data management/permitting documentation.
  *   Basic understanding of stormwater policy and associated permitting within the state of Maine.
  *   Gain a greater appreciation for serving in the public sector, working with diverse stakeholder perspectives, and understanding decision-making within local government.
  *   Develop critical professional skills through networking, presentation development and delivery, and experience in both office and field work environments.

Apply higher order thinking skills, such as critical thinking, analysis, synthesis, evaluation, and complex problem solving, to "real world" situations.

Opportunities and Support:

  *   Daily access to Environmental & Sustainability Coordinator to ask questions, share ideas and process information.
  *   Weekly access to PRLT Program Manager to provide guidance on water quality monitoring, including lab functions, data collection, & interfacing with State governmental agencies.
  *   Assist with environmental permitting compliance in accordance with the Clean Water Act.
  *   Assist with citizen science programming to collect high-quality data useful to various agencies within the state of Maine, including the Town.
  *   Connect with a network of professionals and learn more about the Town of Windham, local government and state government, and land trusts.
 Required Education/Experience:

  *   Pursuing a degree in natural sciences, environmental science/studies, geology, natural resource management, hydrology, soil science, biology, chemistry, ecology, limnology, or other related fields.
  *   Valid Driver's License.
  *   Any equivalent combination of education and experience which demonstrates possession of the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities needed to perform the essential functions of the position.

This position is part-time, not to exceed 240 hours for the season, which includes working on weekends.  The rate of pay is $15/hr.
