7 Lakes Alliance
The 7 Lakes Alliance, a nonprofit dedicated to conserving the lands and waters of the Belgrade Lakes Region in Maine, is hiring a Lake Scientist. All seven of the Belgrade Lakes are listed as impaired or threatened. Our lake science program conducts monitoring and research to quantify biogeochemical cycles as drivers of lake eutrophication to enable science-based management activities within the lakes and watershed. We partner closely with Colby College in this endeavor. Examples of specific duties of the new hire include:
Coordinating year-round lake monitoring activities in conjunction with the Lake Science Director
Optimizing plankton enumeration workflow using a Fluid Imaging FlowCam
Building, deploying, and maintaining lake measurement buoys and autonomous stream samplers
Collecting and analyzing data from multiple data streams including buoys, autonomous samplers, and discrete profiler
Managing 6 undergraduate summer research students along with the Lake Science Director and Colby partners
Participating in 7 Lakes Alliance public education and outreach activities.
Required qualifications include:
A Master’s degree in Ecology, Environmental Science, or Environmental Engineering with an emphasis in aquatic science OR a Bachelor’s degree in one of those areas plus two years or postgraduate work experience in aquatic sciences
A driver’s license with a clean driving record
Ability to do field work in a variety of weather conditions
Proficiency in:
Field sampling in lakes
Boating operation and maintenance
Trailer towing
Phytoplankton identification (to functional group level)
Data visualization and analysis in R or Python
Working with large datasets
Enthusiasm to engage with the public, donors, and lake associations on lake science issues
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $45,000.00 - $55,000.00 per year dependent on degree and experience
