Water Resources Science, Outreach, and Education Intern

The Portland Water District (PWD) is seeking a Water Resources Science, Education, and Outreach Support Intern. Our mission to protect Sebago Lake, the water supply for Greater Portland, is multifaceted and comprehensive. This support position will help our scientists and educators with a broad range of projects from assisting with water quality monitoring programs and environmental inspections, to supporting classroom educators who subscribe to our programs.

Duties and enrichment opportunities of the position include taking part in water quality sampling runs on Sebago Lake and its tributaries, supporting our rain barrel distribution program, and supporting our WaterWays and TroutKids education curriculums by maintaining and delivering lesson kits to teachers. These lesson kits provide middle school teachers with all the tools they need to deliver engaging hands-on water resources lessons and activities to hundreds of students in the Greater Portland area. The school-based education programs culminate in field trip events in which students engage in water quality testing and environmental assessment and ultimately release brook trout fry into local streams.

To be eligible you must have completed a minimum of one year of college coursework in environmental science, biology, education, or a related field. Preference will be given to candidates who are currently enrolled and those with both education and environmental science coursework. You must possess a State of Maine driver’s license with a clean record, have the ability to interact professionally with a variety of audiences, and work both independently and as part of a team. You must be proficient with word processing and spreadsheet programs and be able to navigate Google drive. We’re looking for someone who is creative, flexible, and enthusiastic, with strong writing and organizational skills. A passion for people and the environment is key.

This is a paid, part time (up to 20 hours per week) position that will begin in October and continue through June, 2024. A flexible schedule of hours to accommodate classes is possible. Some weekend or evening work may be required. Visit pwd.org/employment-opportunities to apply.
