* Risk Communication with NOAA Office for Coastal Management, September 13, 2023, 9am-4pm, $40 In-person training, Mather Auditorium, Wells Reserve. Many communities struggle with how to prepare for hazards. It can be difficult to talk about vulnerability to hazards, and it can be even more difficult to keep people engaged and motivated to take action. This training provides insights into how and why people respond to risk, and helps participants develop new skills to better connect with a variety of audiences. Understanding and connecting with an audience’s diverse values and concerns can lead to a higher level of community engagement and can help motivate action to reduce risk. * Writing Effective Survey Questions with NOAA Office for Coastal Management, October 10, 2023, 9am-11am, $20 Over Zoom. Surveys are a popular community engagement tool to help people understand their stakeholders and quickly assess large populations. Unfortunately, because of their popularity, many people untrained in survey creation administer poorly designed surveys that yield questionable results. This workshop serves to provide best practices to write more effective survey questions. If your background is not in the social sciences but you nonetheless find yourself in the position of crafting surveys, this workshop is for you! * Crucial Conversations for Community Resilience with Chris Feurt, PhD, October 19, 2023, 10am-12am, $20, Over Zoom. A Crucial Conversation is a discussion between two or more people where the stakes are high, opinions vary, and emotions run strong. When conversations turn crucial, people tend to follow one of two ineffective paths: they either speak directly and abrasively to get the results they want but harm relationships, or they remain silent with the hope of preserving relationships only to sacrifice results. But there’s a better way. Crucial Conversations give people the skills to step into disagreement— rather than over or around it—and turn disagreement into dialogue for improved relationships and results. Typically a 2-day training, Chris Feurt will give a high-level overview of best practices for having a crucial conversation when working on community resilience. Precourse work: 15 minutes.
