2023 Field Technician Job Description



The Field Technician is responsible for the collection of various local environmental data and scheduling for Maine Lake Science Center (MLSC) as well as upkeep of the garden, facility, and interpretive trails. The Field Technician reports to the Executive Director but MLSC components of the position will be overseen by LEA’s Research Director and field monitoring components will be overseen by the Staff Limnologist.





Field Monitoring - overseen by Staff Limnologist

●      Field technician for water testing program from May to September

o   Collect water samples and data with staff limnologist during the shoulder water testing season

o   Work with staff limnologist to develop water testing schedule and maintain landowner contacts for field sites

o   Responsible for data collection and data entry for traditional water monitoring program

o   Assist with deployment and retrieval of in-lake temperature sensors and buoys

o   Aid staff limnologist with water testing intern training

o   Provide oversight, field, and logistical support for water testing interns under the direction of Staff Limnologist

●      Aid with collection of acid rain deposition samples

●      Assist staff limnologist and research director with water sample and data collection during winter monitoring.

●      Aid with loon grant including: surveying, raft building, angler education, deployment and retrieval of loon rafts



Secondary and Support Activities

●      Oversee maintenance of MLSC grounds, trails, and facility

●      Assist with trail maintenance of Holt Pond Preserve, Highland Research Forest and Stevens Brook Trail

●      Assist with logistical support to milfoil control program

●      Pursue professional development opportunities

●      Contribute to LEA’s newsletter

●      Contribute content to LEA’s social media platforms



Minimum Qualifications

*       BA/BS degree or equivalent preferred

*       Strong organizational and time management skills

*       Excellent communication skills

*       Competency with Microsoft Office and Google platform

*       Science or environmental monitoring background or experience

*       Valid driver license and reliable transportation

*       Ability to lift 40 pounds

Desired Knowledge, Skills, and Experience

*       Past field work experience

*       Some management experience

*       Interest in lake and watershed preservation and management



Location: This position will work out of LEA’s Maine Lake Science Center at 51 Willett Road in Bridgton but will also travel to waterbodies within the towns of Bridgton, Harrison, Waterford, Sweden, Denmark and Naples.



Compensation: Annual salary range beginning at $38,000 and commensurate with experience, plus paid time off, health, and retirement benefits.



Hours: This is a full-time equivalent position; flexible work arrangements are negotiable
