[SchoolFinance] Quick Question About Clearing Snow from School Buses

Our transportation dept is considered 'essential personnel' so they are
required to work as directed on snow days. We usually time the cleaning so
it is when the storm is done--so they don't necessarily come in at their
normal shift time. We normally do not need the whole crew---so most
'volunteer' to come in and are paid. Those who do not come in must take
benefit time to be compensated. We have the 'right' to direct people to
come in if necessary, but we have never had to do that--we normally have
enough crew members to clean. They are paid their regular driving rate and
if they work over 8 hours, they get OT (which is part of their contract).
I do believe that if they work less, they still get paid their full shift
of 8 hours. On snow days, usually their only job is to clean the fleet to
be ready for school and sometimes they also work with our grounds crew to
clean up building walkways, etc, so if it only takes a few hours to clean,
they get their full 8 hours of pay.
*~Thanks,*
