[SchoolFinance] Retention of personnel files

Has anyone ever received legal advice about retention of past employee
personnel files?  I believe I've been to a training before, that said you
had to keep the hard copies, and couldn't just have an electronic version.
I would like to know if someone has heard differently.  We have lots of
filing cabinets, full of all past employees, and would love to have some
office space back.  We have a scanner, and time to scan, so we can clean
out.
