You may disregard that previous information: MaineCare will be able to continue to pay for children receiving vaccines in all healthcare settings they have been using in recent years. Effective December 11, 2024, the PREP Act was amended a twelfth (12th) time to extend coverage through December 31, 2029. As a result, MaineCare members may continue to receive flu and COVID-19 vaccines through a pharmacy provider if they choose. MaineCare members may also get vaccines through their primary care provider and vaccine clinics.”

Exciting news! The National Association of School Nurses (NASN) has released the Asthma Toolkit! The toolkit can assist school nurses by providing resources to support a student with asthma. Providing safe, supportive, and healthy environments and assist students to be engaged in managing their chronic disease. Resource: CMS Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) Provider Toolkit<https://www.cms.gov/files/document/2024-10/cms-2024-omh-scd-provider-toolkit.pdf>
This toolkit is intended to assist healthcare providers and the care team in supporting individuals with SCD. Care team members can use this toolkit to understand the basics of SCD, including information on screening, diagnosis, and treatment, as well as how to identify resources to support individuals with SCD.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has a communications toolkit<https://www.cdc.gov/heart-disease/php/heart-month/index.html> available for American Heart Health Month in February.  National Wear Red Day<https://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/health-topics/education-and-awareness/heart-month/wear-red-day> is recognized on February 7, 2025 to bring attention to the fact that heart disease is a leading cause of death in the US.

Enhancing Partner Engagement to Support Student Health
Strong partnerships can be critical for improving and/or maintaining a student's health. The American Academy of Pediatrics will host a 5-session Learning Community Series for school health professionals focused on enhancing partner engagement and relationships to support student health. Each learning session will include presentations from guest speakers and facilitated discussion among attendees for peer-to-peer learning opportunities.

ME SUD Learning Community's 3rd Annual Conference<https://www.eventbrite.com/e/mesud-lc-2025-creating-opportunities-for-innovation-across-the-lifespan-tickets-1020610582727?aff=oddtdtcreator>, at Sebasco Harbor Resort and on Zoom, is Maine's foremost opportunity for clinicians and community partners to hear updates on state-of-the-art collaborative practices for treating persons with Substance Use and Opioid Use Disorders (SUD/OUD).  Learning sessions will address the current lethality of fentanyl and the epidemic of drug overdose deaths. Join us to learn practical means to integrate these methodologies into practice, whether in primary care or behavioral health and working with youth or adults.

Suicide Prevention Gatekeeper Training: This training provides an accessible, introductory overview of suicide prevention. The training will provide up-to-date information regarding suicide, teach basic suicide intervention skills, increase personal confidence and the ability to effectively respond to suicidal behavior, and identify helpful resources available to staff.

Suicide Prevention Advanced Gatekeeper Training<https://namimaine.org/event/advanced-gatekeeper-training-1-31-25/%20%20%20%20Paragraph%20locked%20by%20Diaz,%20Tammy>: Designed for school staff who must renew their Gatekeeper certification every five (5) years, the Advanced Gatekeeper Training deepens suicide prevention skills for the school setting.

  *   Virtual – Friday, January 31st from 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM

Suicide Prevention Assessment & Management Training: The Suicide Assessment and Management Training is designed to prepare a new or seasoned clinician to understand the risk of suicide, how to approach and complete an effective suicide risk assessment and intervention as well as ongoing management for individuals at increased risk. The focus is on assessment skills for those in clinical roles, including counselors, social workers, nurses, and psychologists. This training qualifies for Gatekeeper recertification for school clinicians (e.g. school counselors, social workers, etc.…)

Suicide Prevention Training of the Trainer: This half-day program is available to train Gatekeepers to facilitate a 1-2 hour Suicide Prevention Awareness Session for co-workers, school staff, and/or other community members. Materials, including PowerPoint presentations and model handouts, are provided for preparing, planning, and conducting the sessions.

In-person – Thursday, February 6th from 8:30 AM to 1:30 PM at the NAMI Maine office in Hallowell

Non-Suicidal Self-Injury<https://namimaine.org/event/non-suicidal-self-injury-nssi-training-2-21-25/>: Non-Suicidal Self-Injury (NSSI) is the direct, deliberate destruction of body tissue in the absence of suicidal intent. This training will review demographics, risk factors, and warning signs of self-injury as well as recommendations for assessment, intervention, and management of self-injury. Introduction to NSSI protocol development and implementation will be offered, as well as resources to support professional staff in addressing assessment and ongoing treatment needs.

  *   Virtual – Friday, February 21st from 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM

Collaborative Safety Planning: Best practice recommendations for addressing and managing suicide risk include the use of a good assessment tool for determining risk and guiding intervention. A vital next step is the collaborative development and use of a Safety Plan to help individuals manage themselves during and following periods of crisis.  It is often used with people at increased risk for suicide, but it is an excellent tool for use with anyone at risk of escalating crisis.

Suicide Prevention Protocol Development: Protocols provide organization staff with direction, structure, and support to safely assist in a suicidal situation, including prevention, intervention, and postvention. This training offers resources, model forms (clinical and administrative), and examples of protocols developed by other school districts.
