Good afternoon school nurses.
Thank you to those who joined us for Office Hours today. We talked briefly about taking advantage of the sun today before we get another snow/ice event tomorrow. You've got to love sprintime in Maine!
Here is a recap of the announcements and discussion.
A notice went to superintendents on 3/26 about <https://mailchi.mp/maine/cu5lemq6y0-1593624?e=d990143ad9> biohazard waste<https://mailchi.mp/maine/cu5lemq6y0-1593624?e=d990143ad9>.<https://mailchi.mp/maine/cu5lemq6y0-1593624?e=d990143ad9> There is contact information on the notice and they are your best contacts for questions. If your school works with MSMA, you can contact Scott. If not, you can contact Eric. We will try to help the best we can too.

Save the Date! MASN, Maine DOE, and Maine AAP are partnering to plan and host a 2025 School Health Summit on Saturday, October 25 in Augusta. There will be an evening event on October 24. More details to come when they are available, but this is an exciting opportunity to be in the room with health professionals with a vested interest in school health.
While you’re saving the date, there will be a New School Nurse Orientation in mid-August (tentatively the 12th). More communication will come on that in the next month.

Adoption of the Board of Nursing Rule *Proposed Rule Pending Approval* Delegation of Nursing Activities and Tasks to UAPs by RNs<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__www.maine.gov_boardofnursing_docs_Provisionally-2520Adopted-2520Rule-2520-2D-2520Chapter-25206-2520Delegation-2520of-2520Nursing-2520Activities-2520and-2520Tasks-2520to-2520UAPs-2520by-2520RNs.clean-2520copydocx.pdf&d=DwMFaQ&c=euGZstcaTDllvimEN8b7jXrwqOf-v5A_CdpgnVfiiMM&r=rtkOb__pPSuIFUGFd-7vPcC6DVS5P-Jh6M3bXxlHNzc&m=zxpCBKGpvOdYMfHo100KuK7av87uiAZN82QhOCnIWiVLx_G_VMZQk7Ha8KzniGBb&s=18MUnYyEQ9n_jS9BMzHknxFuRYVXV9XCth_hjPwyd4Y&e=> was not authorized by the Legislature. This means that the State of Maine does not have a fully approved rule regarding delegation to unlicensed personnel. The Board of Nursing will need to revise the proposed rule and try again. Until approved by legislation, the State of Maine only allows coordination and oversight. I am including a link to both the current Chapter 6 of our Nursing Rules that outlines coordination and oversite, as well as the proposed Chapter 6 to include delegation:
Chapter 6 Regulations Relating to Coordination and Oversight of Patient Care Services by Unlicensed Health Care Assistive Personnel<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__www.maine.gov_boardofnursing_docs_Chapter-25206.pdf&d=DwMFaQ&c=euGZstcaTDllvimEN8b7jXrwqOf-v5A_CdpgnVfiiMM&r=rtkOb__pPSuIFUGFd-7vPcC6DVS5P-Jh6M3bXxlHNzc&m=zxpCBKGpvOdYMfHo100KuK7av87uiAZN82QhOCnIWiVLx_G_VMZQk7Ha8KzniGBb&s=WyYQPTDH8Ai62QrWztysaYDbK6CyX3at0k2p_WOzNDg&e=>
If you want to read what the ANA posted in their newsletter regarding this bill and the outcome, you can do that here: https://www.nursingnetwork.com/newsletters/89#newsletter_component_article_12427
We had a good discussion about the Docket for Schools pilot program<https://mailchi.mp/maine/cu5lemq6y0-1593639?e=d990143ad9> and what it will mean for immunization reporting and tracking for next year. Those nurses that are part of the testing right now are working to provide feedback and questions to make the process better next school year. I am excited to see how it may improve reporting accuracy and simplify the tracking process for some.
We talked about the information that Sarah DeCato recently shared about measles and what would happen if we have a case of measles in Maine. As a reminder, even apart from the Texas outbreak, there is always a risk of measles coming into the state through out of country travel. If there is a case, schools would follow the guidance provided by Maine CDC on when and who should be excluded from school.
The following is a professional learning opportunity for those responsible for teaching sexuality education to adolescents of all abilities. Health Education is required to include content on decision-making and consent regarding sexual activity. Title 20-A MRS §4723<https://legislature.maine.gov/legis/statutes/20-A/title20-Asec4723.html>
