Do you have any questions or concerns related to your school nursing practice the School Health Advisory Committee (SHAC)<https://www.maine.gov/doe/index.php/schoolsupports/schoolhealth/advisorycommittee> may be able to help you navigate? SHAC meets quarterly (next meeting in June) and will review the submissions sent through this form in order to keep a pulse on what school nurses see as important issues. Questions should be related to general issues of school nursing practice and not specific to an individual case. Please do not include any student-identifying information. Suggestions for areas of concern are listed below. Please provide a brief description in the space listed under the appropriate category. For more information about SHAC.<https://www.maine.gov/doe/index.php/schoolsupports/schoolhealth/advisorycommittee> Use THIS FORM<https://forms.gle/52wPFXMadMHfmbBf8> to give feedback to SHAC.
On April 2, 2024, An Act Relating to Delegation of Nursing Activities and Tasks to Unlicensed Assistive Personnel by Registered Professional Nurses was enacted as Public Law, Chapter 592.<https://legislature.maine.gov/backend/App/services/getDocument.aspx?documentId=106754> This was in the legislative session as LD 2126<https://legislature.maine.gov/billtracker/#Paper/2126?legislature=131> and it authorizes the delegation of specific nursing activities and tasks by a nurse to unlicensed assistive personnel, but preserves the authority of a nurse, in the exercise of the nurse's professional judgment, to refuse to delegate specific nursing activities and tasks in any care setting. The law also specifies that the authorization to delegate may not be construed to require a nurse to delegate or permit a person to coerce a nurse into delegating, specific nursing activities and tasks against the nurse's professional judgment. The law defines "unlicensed assistive personnel" and requires the State Board of Nursing to adopt major substantive rules concerning delegation. The Board of Nursing will be starting the rulemaking process this summer. When there are notices for public comment, I will share that with you. This is your chance to have a voice in nursing regulation as it relates to coordinating unlicensed personnel.
Each spring, the Department of Education collects the School Health Annual Report from all schools. It will be opening up for submissions in a few weeks. If you want to start gathering the information you will need you can download the worksheet here<https://www.maine.gov/doe/sites/maine.gov.doe/files/inline-files/2024_School_Health_Annual_Report_Survey.pdf>. When open for submissions, the School Health Annual Reporting link can be found in the Reporting Calendar and will be emailed out to superintendents (and nurses).
As always, thank you for all you do every single day!
