Skills-Based Physical Education Training with OPEN PE
Skills-Based Health Education Training Opportunities
with Sarah Benes and Holly Alperin
Inclusive Teaching Practices and Learning…Moving the Needle
The Maine DOE is excited to offer this workshop focused on skills-based curriculum resources and is activity-based, so come ready to move. Each OPEN module includes teaching tools around academic rigor, tiered questioning techniques, UDL strategies and SEL integration. Assessment, evaluation, and learning management systems are also incorporated. This training is for all grade levels.
Day 1 - Core Elements of Skills-Based Health Education
The Maine DOE is pleased to have Holly Alperin and Sarah Benes the co-authors of The Essentials of Teaching Skills-Based Health Education - Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment* as well as supporting resources, back in Maine to offer two day-long interactive workshops. The Day 1 workshop will focus on the foundations of a skills-based approach to health education (SBHE), shifting the emphasis of the curriculum, instruction, and assessment from primarily knowledge acquisition (learning a lot of new information) to skill acquisition (learning how to do something that will promote health and well-being of self and others). The session will engage in learning information and skills needed for a skills-based approach; curricula planning and development; strategies for effective instruction, and meaningful assessments. Even if you’re familiar with SBHE, you’ll take away new learning!
Day 2 - Advanced Skills-Based Health Education
The Day 2 workshop requires that you previously attended the Day 1 workshop or another skills-based workshop in the past few years. This is a hands-on workshop in which participants will work on aspects of their curriculum to transition to or advance your skills-based health education practice with direct guidance from Holly or Sarah.
The Maine DOE will host this highly engaging event focused on moving the needle on diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice (DEIJ) and the impact on the school community. The training includes an exploration of foundational concepts in DEIJ and what it looks like in curriculum, instructional strategies, and classroom management practices. Following the training, participants are invited to join a virtual DEIJ Community of Practice for conversations and technical assistance. Anyone working with youth is more than welcome to attend! These trainings are being delivered by the Maine DOE HE & PE Specialist and HE & PE Teachers Leaders.

Suicide Prevention Conference
Together with the University of Maine at Orono and the Penobscot River Educational Partnership (PREP), MAHPERD is providing a day of professional development for Health Education and Physical Education teachers. It is open to ALL!
Join colleagues from around the state to learn how to implement puberty education in your school or organization during this day-long training. Puberty Happens addresses the social, physical, and emotional changes of puberty for youth in grades 4-6. During the training, participants explore specific activities in the curriculum, increase their comfort level and demonstrate skills in delivering lessons on puberty topics.
Cultivating Connections: Strengthening Communities Through Sex Ed
This conference will uplift the voices of people working, living, or who have a connection in Maine. When youth feel connected and know that they matter to their communities, their health outcomes are improved. Educators and youth professionals will come together to share collective wisdom and experience on how to build connections, skills, and tools young people need to navigate a changing world.
Hope and Coping: Promoting Recovery to Strengthen Communities
Maine’s annual Beyond the Basics in Suicide Prevention Conference is designed for an adult audience that has attained basic training and knowledge in suicide and suicide prevention, and wishes to deepen their understanding of prevention and expand their skill set.
