Good afternoon everyone! Here are the follow up notes from office hours this past Wednesday.
We have wrapped up this year's Pediatric Education for Pre-Hospital Professionals courses. We had 37 participants join at 3 separate locations. Although no further courses are planned at this time, we will look in to the possibility.
Save the Dates for School Nurse Summer Institute July 30-31, 2024, at Thomas College in Waterville—Our planning committee is working hard to make this a packed two-day learning adventure. The committee is applying for accreditation for this event with the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). If awarded, attendees will be able to earn up to 8 NCPDs. We are planning to open registration at an Early Bird rate on May 1. It will be $125 for early registration. Regular registration begins June 1, with a cost of $150. Rooms are available on campus in the dorms—you will make arrangements with Thomas College directly (more information to come): With bedding= $80.60 for one night. 2 nights=$120.60. 3 nights=$160.60. OR there are several hotels in Waterville if that isn’t for you.
Contact Hours vs. NCPD (Nursing Continuing Professional Development). With more school nurses in Maine being nationally certified—we are up to 94, by the way, we wanted to share some information.
To maintain your DOE certification as a school nurse (teacher and all others as well), you are required to complete 90 hours of continuing education. This can be a combination of college courses, webinars, and in person learning. Your local certification committee has a process that you have to follow. Contact Hours certificates generally DO qualify for this process. Nursing Continuing Professional Development (NCPD) (previously called CNE) credits also count for this. Your national certification is a separate process and contact hours do NOT qualify. You must have NCPDs and follow the process outlined on the NBCSN website. Lynne Signore, who is the MASN representative for national certification talked about the NBCSN process and shared the attached slides. Please contact her directly if you'd like to talk about any of the information she shared.
In the school year 23-24 so far, these folks have obtained their national certification. Congratulations to the following new Nationally Certified School Nurses!

Do you know or work with Maine youth in Kindergarten through 8th grade? Maine CDC is running the 2024 Lyme Disease Awareness Month poster contest NOW! The theme is “Little Tick, Big Deal.”
Kids in Maine ages 5-14 years old have one of the highest rates of tickborne diseases in Maine, including Lyme disease. Maine CDC wants to encourage all youth in Maine to take tick prevention seriously and show off their knowledge in this poster contest! Posters should illustrate at least one of the four approaches to personal prevention:
* Use caution in tick-infested areas
* Use an EPA-approved repellent
* Wear protective clothing
* Perform daily tick checks both by sight and by touch
Please consider sharing the attached social media images on your or your organization’s social media accounts to help spread the word about tickborne disease prevention and this poster contest. You can find more information about the contest at www.maine.gov/lyme/month<http://www.maine.gov/lyme/month>.
Suggested social media post text: “Do you know a Maine student in K-8th grade? Kids in K-8th grades can make and submit a poster for our 2024 Little Tick, Big Deal Poster Contest. Winners will get a prize and may have their artwork featured as the 2024 Lyme Disease Awareness Poster! Submit posters by April 30th. To learn more visit http://www.maine.gov/lyme/month.”
Have a great weekend.
