Premark First Before Submitting a Ticket

Dear New England Excavator,



Before you contact Dig Safe, the first step is to premark your proposed excavation area. Premarking is required in MA, ME, NH, RI, and VT, and it helps every project get off to a smooth start by clearly communicating the scope of your work to the responding locate technicians. Premarking should be done using white paint, stakes, or flags to outline where you plan to dig. The use of pink paint is recommended for premarking in snowy conditions.

Why This Reminder Matters

Member utility companies are reporting a noticeable increase in jobsites that are not premarked when locators arrive. State regulators and utility locators are concerned about the rise in noncompliance and the impact it has on safety and scheduling. Submitting a Dig Safe ticket without premarking, or with the intention of marking “later in the day,” is a violation and may result in fines.

• Keep the locating process efficient and on schedule

• Reduce excess markings on streets and properties

• Clearly define the boundaries of your job for everyone involved
