[Cacfp] Cup sizes when serving milk

Dear CACFP Participating Sponsor:

This communication is to provide clarification regarding cup sizes used for milk service in the CACFP-

When participants serve themselves milk, the cup/glass size used does not have to be large enough to hold the full minimum serving size for the age group(s) being served. This is different than instructions we've provided recently during reviews and as part of technical assistance. When supervising adults are assisting participants with serving milk (hand over hand), the participant will guide the amount of milk poured. We consider it best practice for cups/glasses to be large enough to hold the full minimum serving size; however, when participants serve themselves, this is not a requirement.

When supervising adults choose to serve any meal component (including milk), the full required minimum quantity must be provided to each participant (see 7 CFR 226.20(n)(2)). Our Regional USDA Office confirmed that when supervising adults serve milk, participants must receive the full minimum serving size; therefore, the cup/glass used for the milk must be large enough to comfortably hold the full minimum serving size for the age group(s) being served.
